Ten-Year History on Merck (MRK) and Eli Lily (LLY) Essay
Ten-Year History on Merck (MRK) and Eli Lily (LLY) - Essay Example Eli Lily and Company emerged in 1876 and currently has over $20 billion in annual revenue. This report constitutes a broad ranging analysis on these companies over the last ten years and provides a recommendation of which company would be a more desirable acquisition. Qualitative, Cultural, Social There are a number of notable incidents that have occurred in the last ten years of these companiesââ¬â¢ histories. While the 2008 economic recession is a prominent consideration that had a detrimental impact on both organizations, there are other problems that have been encountered. For Merck perhaps the most prominent such issue is the 2007 price fixing settlement the company reached, as the company had to pay over $20 million dollar out-of-court settlement with the Department of Health over oligopolistic price fixing in terms of its pharmaceutical drugs (Bowers 2005). Eli Lilly found similar legal troubles as they had to pay a reported $1.42 billion in fines levied by the United State s Justice Department for improper marketing techniques in relation to the companyââ¬â¢s anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa. ... From this period the equity valuation went on a steady decline until its November 16th, 2004 trading price of $26.41. While the stock is dividend driven, itââ¬â¢s clear that during this three years period there was a substantial market correction. From the November 16th, 2004 trading price made a steady climb and three years later on November 16th, 2007 the equity had largely regained its equity valuation and was trading at $58.38 ("Financial statement," 2011). The subsequent economic recession and the company price crashed to a ten year low of $25.43 by December 28th, 2009. Since then the stock has slowly climbed and is not trading at $35.67 ("Financial statement," 2011). The clear implication is that the company has demonstrated a past top over $60.00 and that there is strong historical precedent for the current $35 trading price to continue to grow. The Merck equity financials can be compared to those of Eli Lily in an attempt to determine both companiesââ¬â¢ financial stren gths in relation to each other as market as macro-concerns within the health care sector. In this context of understanding itââ¬â¢s demonstrated that both companies share slightly similar trends in terms of equity valuation. In November 16th, 2001 Eli Lilly was trading at $79.02. The company witnessed a steady decline in this market price that was topped off by the 2008 recession. By November 16th 2009 the company was trading at $35.36, greatly similar to its current market price of $37.65 ("Financial statement," 2011). While both companies are dividend driven and currently share a similar market valuation, one of the prominent concerns is that while Merck experienced significant ups and downs in valuation, Eli Lilly has demonstrated a steady

Team and Leadership Recommendations Research Paper
Team and Leadership Recommendations - Research Paper Example Nandoââ¬â¢s Restaurant has devised the method of improving its leadership and performance as the staff motivation (Hambley & Kline 2007, p. 142). The first team to be considered in the strategy is HR team. This is because they are the immediate people who will influence and change the attitude of the entire employees, as they are the immediate people dealing with other employees direct. HR team should be motivated in various ways. They should be given time to attend frequent leadership seminars and training (Harris, Hopkins & Chapman 2013, p. 63). This will enable them to acquire more skills, which will enable them to lead by example and motivate the other employees. The HR team should be given chance to give their new ideas on how the services can be improved or solve certain problems. This will make the HR team feel comfortable when delivering their duties as they feel they are part of the organization. The shareholders should consult the team before taking any step or making an y decision concerning employeesââ¬â¢ performances. (Lumby & Coleman 2007, p. 61). This is a kind of motivation on the HR team, as they feel recognized before any decision is made in the company.HR team should employ the theory of team formation when trying to meet the targets of the organization. HR team together with other managers and supervisors should convince the other employees to form teams. When the employees work in teams it will be easy as they will work together aiming the same target.
On Maximising Profits Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
On Maximising Profits - Essay Example The desire to maximise profits does not form a clear and unique behaviour prescription. Enke (1965, p.54) adds that consequently, the economist cannot make individual-firm predictions in the short run.1 When the future outcomes of present decisions are uncertain, motivation does not constitute a criterion for each entrepreneur. To clarify motivation and criterion, Enke (1965, p.53) provides the following extreme gambling example. Suppose that one gambler might be given a hundred dollars and is told to make a single bet at a roulette table and "maximise profits" whereas another player might similarly be given one hundred dollars but then to "maximise losses." If they are obedient, both gamblers will play a number than a colour because, if they are ever to secure the maximum profits and maximum losses that they respectively seek, the longest odds provide profits or losses at the highest rate; if they both played a colour, they would be acting that is inconsistent with their instructions. Unless people have beliefs concerning the likelihood of certain future events occurring, a specific motivation cannot provide them with criterion for selecting one alternative from one another. The economist cannot predict how an entrepreneur will act if the economist does not know the entrepreneur's assessments of future pr obabilities (Enke 1965, p.55). Baumol (1961, p.193) also provides an example as to why the profit-maximising assumption does not hold for all firms. A small firm that is run by its owner may seek to maximise the proprietor's free time subject to the constraint that his earnings exceed some minimum level, and, indeed, there have been cases of overworked businessmen who, on medical advice, have turned down profitable business ventures. According to Anthony (1965, p.61), if a firm is to maximise its profits, the businessman must set a price such that the marginal revenue equals the marginal cost. This means that as a minimum he must be able top estimate the demand at all prices and the marginal cost at all volumes, and he must further estimate the extent to which demand is interdependent with cost because of advertising and other order-getting expenditures. In practice, states Anthony, is a "fantastically" [emphasis mine] difficult task, so difficult that is rarely attempted in practice. In Anthony's words: "who can accurately estimate the demand for a product at even one price" Another critic of the profit maximising firm is the "denigration" of the importance of managerial activity or to imply that it is without significant difficulties. Baumol (1993, p.3) defines the manager as the individual who oversees the ongoing efficiency of the continuing processes. In its generic and simplest form, the theoretical firm must choose among alternative values for a small number of rather well-defined variables: price, output, perhaps advertising outlay, and occasionally, a few others. The firm is then to perform a mathematical calculation which yields the optimal (profit maximising) values for all of its decision variables that the theory declares the firm's vector of decisions. Until there is such a shift in one of the relationships that define the problem, the firm is taken to replicate

Construction of Hong Kong International Airport Assignment
Construction of Hong Kong International Airport - Assignment Example The 1984 Declaration also stated that British rule over Hong Kong was to end in July 1, 1997. Meanwhile, firstly, Hong Kong Airport was under pressure as it became smaller and difficult to handle the increasing number of people and cargo (Perren, 2005: 1). Secondly, the rapid increase of Hong Kongââ¬â¢s population made it a dense city, and thirdly, residential houses were constructed next to the Kai Tak airport, which was very risky to the population. The above issues instigated the need of constructing a new airport in Hong Kong. David Wilson, Hong Kongââ¬â¢s British governor, came up with an idea of building an airport before the 99-year land lease ended in 1997. The new Hong Kong International Airport, at Chep Lap Kok, was to be constructed on an artificial island after the flattening of Chep Lap Kok and Lam Chau Islands. The construction of this airport called for support from the UK and Chinese governments as both governments signed a memorandum of understanding that estab lished the parameters of control of the construction of the airport. The airport came into existence after the investment of more than $20 billion USD in the construction. In overall, the whole project comprised constructing large tunnels, a high-speed rail system, new superhighways, suspension bridges, cargo and freight terminals and the airport. The construction of the airport started in 1991, and it was officially opened in 1998 (Craig, 1998: 98). The stakeholders and their success The major stakeholders during the construction of the new Hong Kong International Airport were the governments of Britain, China and Hong Kong. Firstly, the British government was involved because Hong Kong was a British territory. Secondly, the Chinese government was involved because Hong Kong was to fall under the authority of the Chinese government after the expiry of the lease, and thirdly, Hong Kong was involved since it was the local government. Conflict of interest ensued among the stakeholders because of future social, political and economic benefits. However, tension among the stakeholders was cooled down after the signing of the memorandum of understanding in 1991 by the British and Chinese governments. The bodies that were charged with the task of supervising the construction of the new airport were: The Sino-British Airport Committee Board and the Provisional Airport Authority. In essence, the airportââ¬â¢s financial and policy framework was negotiated by the Sino-British Airport Committee Board while the design and development of the whole project was overseen by the Provisional Airport Authority. Additionally, the Provisional Airport Authority had the objective of financing and delivering the following complete infrastructures: the tunnels, bridges, cargo and freight terminals, railway connection and the airport (Annual Report 2009/10, 2009: 47). The stakeholders who were involved in the construction of the new Hong Kong International Airport managed to drive the project into a major success. Firstly, the success of the project was seen when the two governments of UK and China signed a memorandum of understanding that ensured the construction of the airport. Secondly, the memorandum of understanding by the two governments ensured a smooth transition of Hong Kong after the 99-year lease expired in 1997. Thirdly, the

IP 2 - Essay Example Then, it is time to find out the people or place from where the information can be collected. Thereafter, the information can be collected. At the next stage, the fears, expectations, merits, and limits in each point of view are analyzed (Stages in decision making). An assumption can be considered as a statement that one considers as true but without any concrete evidence to support it. In the business world, it is necessary for companies to make assumptions in a number of different situations. For example, companies will make assumptions on the amount of pension that will be paid to the retirees in future as a part of making financial statements. In addition, we make many assumptions in everyday life too. For example, one driving on the road assumes that all other drivers will obey traffic rules, and that all will stop at red light. As Adamson (2010) points out, there are many other common assumptions made by companies in their day to day functioning. For example, one company assume s that the economic situation will be back to normal soon. Another might assume that the changes in the market are temporary. In addition, another company assumes that what their clients want is the product A. Another assumption is that the company has to invest in the field.

Healthy Grief Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Healthy Grief - Essay Example The five stages are: This stage involves an individual bargain with God to postpone his death. This stage is marked with a hope to achieve any position in the bargain with a promise of reformed lifestyle (Kubler-Ross, 1969). Ross model does not involve any interaction with joy at any stage. However, as it acknowledges the individuality of individual it does not ignore the chance of any joy. A unique individual may not necessary deny his death but welcome it with joy. It all depends upon the individual. The story of Job is about how a devoted Christian survived Godââ¬â¢s test when Satan took away all of his life luxuries, his off springs and gave him a fatal skin disease. Job suffered great loss and so had great grief for his misery. However, he in his grief never cursed or blamed God for anything (Kroll, n.d.). This story exhibits that trails are God tests to gauge our love for him and are an opportunity for us to exhibit our faith in God (Kroll, n.d.). Jobââ¬â¢s story indicates that joy is for those who remain strong and patient during Godââ¬â¢s trial for them. Joy is the reward for passing the test. In this story, joy interacts at the end in the form of reward for Job. In Buddhism, there is no appreciation for grief and it does not allow to celebrated grief. Buddhism advice that grief and sufferings are bad things and one should eliminate its causes. According to Buddhism teachings, one should have equal love and compassion towards all sentient being so that strong affection will not work together to cause grief (Autumn, Workman & Newkirk, 1999). The research that I have conducted on grieving process strengthen my belief that grieving is a very personal experience. Personally, I like to celebrate grief alone so that it does not hurt or influence other people around me. I face grief with a headstrong approach and do not deny it. This research has not changed my views on handling grief but has strengthened

How did I acheive these 5 learning goals Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
How did I acheive these 5 learning goals - Essay Example Then, I researched entirely on the perception of the Chilean cultural on business. Thirdly, I had to look into the US and Chile cultural relationship to business. I found out both cultures significantly value business. Finally, from that cultural scrutiny, I got a better image and understanding of the Chilean perception in the perspective of carrying out business. Though, much effort is vitally necessary in achieving any goals, the results are always much pleasing and rewarding afterward. I also had to consider the instances that I had triumphantly accomplished different learning goals before. Considering those earlier situations, I had to get those factors that significantly lend a hand towards achieving my earlier learning goals. Among the factors included: spending much time to those set learning goals to the effectiveness of achieving them. Consequently, I dedicated many moments in the learning goals up to their competition (Brophy 2010). Additionally, there are many obstacles in achieving any set goals despite all the facts. Hence, I worked tirelessly in an effort to confiscate those obstacles. Nevertheless, the particular action that I took to eliminate the barriers, it exceedingly facilitated in attaining the learning goals. As a result, there was an incredible result in learning goals achievement. They were extremely uncomplicated, but yet exceptionally valuable this applies
